Cheap Sleeps in Italy

July 9, 2009 by Cheap Hotels · Leave a Comment

Cheap Sleeps in Italy

This discerning guide offers descriptions of affordable accommodations throughout Florence, Rome, and Venice, each personally inspected by the author. Includes twelve original maps.

User Ratings and Reviews

1 Star useless book
Now a days you can find latest up to date information about hotel prices online rather than these kind of books… Sorry this book has no pictures either…

5 Stars Buy it and buy it now
I used this book on a trip to Venice and Florence last year and it was invaluable. As the daughter of travel agents, I think I’m pretty travel savvy. But this book helped find some of the most charming hotels I’ve stayed in. And true to its title they were cheap. My only complaint: Gustafson has only published a handful of books. I’m planning a trip to Barcelona this spring and without her advice I feel like I’m traveling blindly.

5 Stars Great guide for the 1st time traveler to Italy
I loved everything about this book. It gave such great detail. Knowing which rooms had great views, closets for storage, and shower curtains were awesome for me and my travel partner to know. The book even goes as far as to say which room you could possibly get fresh flowers from the hotel gardens. We stayed at several of the hotels that were recommed and fell in love with each one. We loved it, and it certainly came in handy during our travels throughtout Italy. I recommend it highly to all that are planning a trip to Italy. And we are looking forward to using the book for our trip coming up in September.

5 Stars This book was exactly what I was looking for!
I ordered several books about Italian hotels before I happened upon this one. The author gives detailed descriptions of the hotels including her personal view. I planned my own vacation using this book as a reference. The prices have increased slightly since the book was published in 1996 and a few of the fax numbers have changed. Overall, I found it to be very useful.

Northern California Cheap Sleeps Recommendations for the Budget Traveler

Northern California Cheap Sleeps Recommendations for the Budget Traveler

If you look forward to weekend road trips but cringe at the creeping costs of a vacation, Northern California Cheap Sleeps will direct you to the region’s best, least expensive lodgings-offering hundreds of penny-pinching ideas for fun along the way.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Not as good as it should be
I bought this book secondhand to compliment my web research into cheap accommodation in Northern California. I was hoping I’d find some hideaways that weren’t mentioned anywhere on the internet, and maybe save some money when I travel there next year. Unfortunately, the places that are listed are either seriously out of date price-wise (there is a later version of this which presumably solves that problem) or in some cases no longer exist at all. The places that were useful I had already easily found by other means. The author aims to list accommodations under US$70 a night, but many of the places listed now have rates that soar waaaay out of that range! The other disappointment was that she really doesn’t list that many places. The majority of the book is taken up with sightseeing information — some of it useful, but this IS called “Cheap Sleeps”! Where are they? Crammed into a page or 2 at the end of each section! Also, Northern California is made up of a great many more areas than she has included - only the “touristy” areas get a mention at all.. the rest are apparently non-existant in her eyes - not much use if those absent areas are the very ones you’re visiting! In conclusion, DON’T buy this expecting to find the best cheap places to sleep in N Cal - I found many, many more places off my own bat which don’t rate a mention in this book. The only thing I found it useful for was that it DOES mention a number of interesting places to visit in each area and covers a few things rarely covered by other guide books: used bookstores, interesting cinemas etc etc. Hopefully the latest edition is MUCH better than this!

5 Stars Excellent, comprehensive, and personal guide
Rebecca Poole Foree has written a guide to northern California from the Cascades to Lake Tahoe to Berkeley to Big Sur that is ideal not only for the budget traveler but for any traveler with good taste and common sense. The descriptions of all areas are not only budget conscious but perceptive and share the author’s personal reflexions about what is of interest in each area. I finally put all the other tour books aside while visiting the area and used the insight and advise of Ms. Foree

exclusively. For the discerning traveler, this guide is the best! Unfortunately, the title implies that only accommadations are included. Perhaps in the future edition( I hope there is one), a title change would give the traveler a clearer sense of the richness of this travel guide. Also, for the budget conscious, The San Francisco Residence Club, 85l California St., (at the top of Nob Hill) is a wonderful place to stay while in San Francisco.

Cheap Eats in London 91Ed

July 3, 2009 by Cheap Hotels · Leave a Comment

Cheap Eats in London 91Ed

London is among the most popular and expensive foreign cities Americans visit. Gustafson, author of Cheap Eats in Paris and Cheap Sleeps in Paris (both Chronicle, 1990), offers similar advice for budget-conscious travelers headed to London. Cheap Eats describes over 100 reasonably priced restaurants, pubs, tearooms, and wine bars where top value in terms of service, cleanliness, food, quality, and atmosphere can be found. Listings include subway locations, hours, holidays open, type of menu and food, tipping, reservations, and price range. Also included are useful tips on London dining etiquette and customs. Cheap Sleeps describes 135 reasonably priced hotels, bed and breakfasts, full-service apartments, and rooms in private homes. Selections were based upon comfort, quality, cleanliness, and overall value. Good advice on what to look for in a room, confirming reservations, currency, clothing, senior discounts, telephones, transportation, etc., will aid unsuspecting tourists. Bathroom and elevator availability is included along with the usual price, size, and location information in each listing. Both titles are essential for budget travelers. Highly recommended for all travel collections.

Cheap Sleeps in Paris 95Ed The Cheap Eats Cheap Sleeps Series

Reliable and discerning, this indispensable guide contains lively, informative descriptions of Paris’s most affordable accommodations, each personally inspected by the author, along with maps, information on local shopping, transportation, currency and more.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Must Have for any Traveler to Paris
This book is filled with vivid descriptions of many of Paris’ less expensive hotels. Sandra includes some pricier gems as well for those who can afford to splurge. But she avoids the chain hotels that don’t offer the character of the smaller Parisian hotels. She describes the accomodations accurately including furnishings, lighting and room size. Many times she recommends specific rooms along with their canopy beds or terrific views! She warns you when there may be street noise and includes the nearest metro stops.

After I read this book I felt as though I knew many of the owners of the small hotels. When I finally got to Paris I saw that she had hit the nail right on the head with the hotel that I finally chose. Thank you!

5 Stars Terrific resource

What a great way to stay in Paris –
at small hotels with small prices.

Thanks to Cheap Sleeps I found an 11-room gem in the elegant 7th arrondissement,
within walking distance of the Louvre, Eiffel Tower, and Musee D’Orsay for
$65/night (single). My room even had its own rooftop terrace to better view
la vie Parisienne. I look forward to a return visit, and to the next edition of this book.

Merci beaucoup, Sandra!

Americas Cheap Sleeps

June 29, 2009 by Cheap Hotels · Leave a Comment

Americas Cheap Sleeps

You start thinking about a leisurely week in New Mexico or a quick escape to Vermont. You open a guidebook and thumb through the listings. You see sweet bed and breakfasts with antiques, homemade muffins, and secluded hot tubs under the stars. You smile. Then you note the prices–and decide that you’ve been meaning to attend to a few chores and get to know your local museums better, anyway, so you might as well stay home.

If this sounds like your scenario, there is a new guide out with just the facts to rekindle your travel wanderlust. Tracy Whitcombe’s tome offers 7,500 listings across the USA for $45 or less a night. Not all cities offer lodgings at that price, but if they do, Whitcombe’s got them. Many of the accommodations are motel chains (Motel 6, Econo-Lodge, and the Red Roof Inn); however, there are some independent options as well, with extras like saunas, pools, and fitness facilities. The descriptions are short and pithy, detailing price, number of units, and amenities ranging from continental breakfast to refrigerators and microwaves.

You can visit Denver, Portland, Chicago, and even New Orleans with a minimum cash outlay for your basic bed with bath, or stay in smaller towns and save even more. It’s easy to find a quaint and romantic inn where you can max out your credit cards, but if economic accommodations are a priority, its nice to be able to make plans you can afford for the vacation you had in mind. –Stephanie Gold
