4 Stars Priceless
Very funny and very visual acting makes this movie such fun to watch. Both lead actors do a wonderful job.
3 Stars Humdrum formula
Yes, we all know Audrey Tautou is beautiful and can act and Gad Elmaleh has style but formula is formula. I admit that we like to see the same formulas over repeatedly; some movies are just fun to watch even when we know the general just of the story and the outcome. However, there comes a time when trying to remake a classic can get boring. This is one of those times. Perhaps it is just because we’re spending more time watching subtitles. Then again, I have the feeling that everybody is just going through motions.
The general story is of course a gold digger who mistakes somebody for being rich. This film expands on this mistaken identity and allows the tables to be turned with a few standard twists. I suggest that if you like this type of film that you really should watch “Dirty Rotten Scoundrels” (1998) as it has the same feel but more depth.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
5 Stars Audrey Tautou:the most gorgeous actress working today.
Priceless is a refreshing old fashioned take on the Romantic Comedy with a slightly modern day slant. A French film with English subtitles, this film is a must-see whether your a Foreign film devotee or not.
The movie tells the story of a gorgeous gold digger played by Audrey Tautou who becomes the object of affection of a young waiter(Gad Elmaleh) who pretends to be a rich man to win her affections. When his ruse is found, he loses her, only to find her a year later and dumped at a time that leaves her to him. However, she just uses him for all his money and drops him. Now penniless the young man finds himself winning the affections of an older woman and becoming much the same person as Tautou! She even coaches him on how to act and how to be a chiseler, but is falling in love with him by his honesty and sweet nature. And that’s what really keeps this film afloat.A genuinely romantic and gentle vibe that never makes any of the characters seem any less than loveable. Both stars gain our sympathy and really shine in this film, and when the wonderful, happy ending does arrive, it is just right and beautiful.
Tautou has her best role since the classic, Amelie(2001), utlizing the same mixture of sweetness, cuteness and sexiness that won her world wide audiences over in that film except this time the sex appeal is played at max volume. The actress looks simply stunning throughout the film, wearing various dresses and skimpy wear that shows off her lovely, exquisite, well formed petite figure to excellent advantage. Wasn’t hard to fall for her again. Always have been a fan of brunettes, and Miss Tautou reminds one of a mixture of Hollywood’s sexiest. a sort of Audrey Hepburn meets Sophia Loren.
The DVD is unfortunately bare bones, so there are no extra features that would have shed more light on this underrated little French sleeper. Only a trailer to suffice and a few unrelated previews to other films.
This film is an absolute must see for fans of Romantic comedies and of it’s gorgeous star, the most talented babe of an actress currently active in cinema.
5 Stars Priceless
Even with some of the best scenery in the world, fine food and the best accommodations, people can find ways to be unhappy or have problems. Audrey Tautou was excellent, supreb, flawless, but she was upstaged by her male lead’s (GAD ELMALEH) brilliant deadpan performance. The movie was sad, but very funny. It shows what people will do for money, the haves and have-nots. Rich people can buy everything they want, except what they want most, youth. I enjoyed the movie.
5 Stars Priceless is Breakfast at Tiffany’s updated, set on the Riviera.
This gem sparkles like diamonds on display in Tiffany’s. Audrey Tautou shows her physical beauty and amazing acting range, pulling off a seemingly impossible character arc from selling her self to the highest bidder to finding true love. Twists along the way let us see the world from all points of view, a rare thing in storytelling. Having it all feel seamless and natural is an amazing tour de force by actors, writers, film crew and the director. “Priceless” is one of the very few romantic comedies that can be watched again without losing an ounce of its punch. And whoever did the costumes for Ms. Tautou deserves an Academy Award.
